Extra care scheme in Kent

VIRTex

Virtual Extra Care (VIRTEx) aims to build a virtual community linking older people with family, carers and the local community. It addresses the growing demand for more independent living from older people and those with long-term conditions. The project aims to:

  • deliver flexible, community-based care
  • preserve social inclusion
  • promote a healthier lifestyle
  • encourage social interaction.

Special set-top boxes will allow users to access a local network through their televisions, enabling them to:

  • book doctors' appointments
  • dial-a-ride
  • request visits by local practitioners
  • book chiropodist appointments.

VIRTEx is a partnership between Tunstall, Fold Housing Association, Housing 21, DigiTV and the University of Sheffield with funding from the Government's Technology Strategy Board as part of the Assisted Living Innovation Platform (ALIP)
