Legendary footballer cuts turf at Madeley

Gordon Banks cutting the turf at new Madeley extra care schemeFOOTBALL legend, Gordon Banks, joined in the celebration to mark the start of work on an exciting project to provide a new extra care scheme alongside a community hub and village centre in Madeley, Staffordshire.

The 1966 World Cup player cut the first turf on the site which will provide 63 apartments and a 200-seat capacity village hall.

As well as featuring an array of environmental features including solar panels, a ground source heat pump and a 'green' roof, the scheme will provide facilites for the local community including:

  • a café
  • advice centre
  • children's centre
  • outreach health work
  • a range of rooms for use by community organisations.

The land will be developed for the benefit of people and wildlife, and includes a children's play area.

Joining scores of villagers and representatives of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Staffordshire County Council, Madeley Parish Council and Housing 21 - the partners in the project - Gordon Banks commented: "I think it will be a wonderful asset for the village. There will be facilities for the old and the young, right next to each other."
